Dallas ISD elementary school students can celebrate their long weekend at the Dallas Arboretum, which is hosting a “DISD Fair Day Family Fun Weekend” Friday through Monday.

Every day of the event, Country Critters Farm will hold a petting zoo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Denmore Delights will sell sweet treats from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the entry plaza.

On Friday, Dave Forehand, the vice president of the gardens, will give a “Learn to Grow” horticulture presentation and discuss “all things gourds, pumpkins and squash” from 11 a.m. to noon. Accordionist Paul Salvie will perform from noon to 2 p.m., and following him are the Reckless Angels, a cover band featuring rock from the ’60s onward. Mighty Beans will sell edamame at the arboretum until 3 p.m.

Saturday will feature a vendor market and craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The arboretum’s Volunteer Advisory Board will take family pictures at the entry plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. At noon, there will be a pumpkin stacking contest, with separate brackets for children and adults. Winners receive tickets to a concert in the arboretum’s Cool Thursday series.  Also at noon, multi-instrumentalist Matthew Babineaux will perform at Jeanne’s Pavilion. At 2 p.m. on the Martin Rutchik Concert Stage, musician Eric Unplugged will perform rock hits.

The vendor market will return on Sunday at the same time slot. At 11 a.m., Chef Jamaal Johnson will teach a fall-themed cooking class. Participants will make soul food and must register ahead of time for $75. At noon, bird trainers from Window to the Wild will host a “meet and greet” with various birds in their care. Pianist Ricky Carr will perform at noon on the pavilion, and The Rock, an ’80s cover band, will perform on the concert stage at 2 p.m.

Monday is “Mommy and Me Day” at the arboretum. International versions of classic fairy tales will be told at 10 and 10:30 a.m. The arboretum will provide a Kindermusik-style class at 12:15 p.m. The Volunteer Advisory Board will take family photos from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Singer-songwriter Carly Carroll will perform at noon, and the Jukebox Heroes will perform pop hits at 2 p.m.
