"Lakewood Theater" by Walter Soza.

“Lakewood Theater” by Walter Soza.

Neighborhood artist Walter Soza has a very specific vision of Lakewood, one that he shares in his unique representations of iconic spots like White Rock Lake or the Granada Theater. Likely, you’ve seen his stylized work of our neighborhood, which have been featured in postcards, t-shirts and posters.

Now, working with the Lakewood Conservatory of Fine Arts, he is encouraging budding artists to copy his style for an art contest. Youngsters ages 3-14 are invited to do their own version of his famous “Lakewood Theater” (above). Entries will be collected at the conservatory until March 31, and then on display through May 1, when a winner will be selected by Soza. The winning artist will receive a copy of the “Lakewood Theater” poster, professional art supplies and more. Get all the details here.

You can meet Soza and get an up-close look at his work during the one-year anniversary celebration for the conservatory this Thursday, Jan. 26, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Soza will display a wide collection of his art, including a new oil painting of the Lakewood Theater. There will be artistic activities for kids and small bites to enjoy, and the party is free to attend at the conservatory, 7320 Gaston Ave.
