I almost skipped the press release because it had “eco-friendly” in the subject line. (I don’t know, it’s just sort of become an overused buzzword whose meaning I’ve forgotten).

But the second part of the subject line, “White Rock Lake Cohousing” got my attention. Turns out the press release is about a piece of property I’ve been wondering about for a couple years now:

It’s 3 acres or so in the Old Lake Highlands area at Lake Highlands-Easton where a sign announcing the "White Rock Crossing" development has stood for about 2 years (I remember seeing it around the time I first started working here).

Well, we finally have a rundown of what Xaevin LLC, an independent development company, plans to do with the space. And it’s very different:

It will feature a “new style of community living, known as Cohousing. “Although relatively new in the United States, cohousing is common in Denmark and many European countries", says Deborah Skinner, president of Xaevin, LLC, and lifetime resident of East Dallas. In the “intentional community” residents “participate in the design and operation of their neighborhood. Members own their own homes and share the community land and common facilities." She describes it as a tight-knit community of people who share community decisions and community projects such as organic gardens, and occasional community meals in a ‘common house. “Neighbors will know each other and each others’ children. People will feel connected and safe,” she adds. They plan to break ground this summer.
