Joel Roland, who owns Yellow Rosa in Deep Ellum, said he hopes to open Remote Coffee around Labor Day.

TC Shaved Ice, owned by Xavier Hernandez, was open for about 30 years on Garland Road, between Easton Road and Lochwood Boulevard. The snow-cone stand was started by Hernandez’s brother Robert, and it closed in East Dallas when Xavier retired last year.

The drive-thru shop will offer coffee, open-faced sandwiches, breakfast tacos and toast, said Roland, who founded Toasted Coffee + Kitchen, which he owned for six months before selling to the current owner.

One of Roland’s priorities is making the items affordable. Three breakfast tacos and a coffee will cost $10. A 24-ounce drip coffee is priced at $2.

“We’re trying to work on being able to provide a manageable habit or a manageable delight in your day-to-day that isn’t going to break your bank,” Roland said.

The name for the business comes from one of the demographics they hope to attract: remote workers.

“It’s like a little trip, like a little break from the mundane of being at your house,” he said.

The shop will have a whole new look when renovations are complete. Instead of the brightly painted brick, the design, inspired by a modern cabin, will incorporate dark-toned woods and glass.

“You’re in Dallas, but I don’t want you to feel like you are in Dallas,” he said. “I want you to feel like you’re escaping somewhere.”
