The $10 Cowboy himself rode through Dallas ahead of his nationwide tour starting on May 20.
The moniker is also the title of Crockett’s newest album, tour and namesake. When he announced the $10 Cowboy tour dates via Instagram on March 14, there was a puzzling lack of Texas shows. The San Benito-born Crockett is Texas through-and-through, h0w could he totally skip over his home state and one of the country’s biggest markets? Especially on a tour about a cowboy?
It was all part of the plan.
One month later, Crockett announced four “album release shows” on back-to-back nights through Austin, Helotes, Houston and Dallas.
Last night, he played the final leg of those shows at Longhorn Ballroom and made a surprise afternoon stop at Good Records just hours before.
At around 4:30, Crockett rolled into the parking space reserved for him and strolled onto Good Records’ iconic Astroturf stage to play a short set of acoustic tunes, including one unreleased song.
When the lights came back on, he signed copies of $10 Cowboy before leaving for Longhorn Ballroom.
Crockett played to a sold-out crowd at Longhorn, and he’ll play two sold-out nights at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on May 20 and 21.
Apparently this appearance was announced on the Good Records Instagram and Facebook last week. I follow Good Records on both Instagram and Facebook. I didn’t even know about it. I now harbor the ultimate resentment towards the Meta algorithm for not showing me in time.
To get candid, I’ve made four separate attempts to see Charley Crockett live that have been foiled in a series of increasing disappointment. Yesterday he played at a record store that I frequent. For free.
This one hurts. But I blame nobody other than myself. Someday Charley, someday.
