EAST DALLASITE LAURA SELLETT worked in the corporate world until about a year ago. That’s when she started her new business, Lollypets, Inc. Even though she’d always wanted to have her own business, it was her dog, Smokey — well, Smokey’s allergies — that helped her realize her dream. “I put him on Benadryl, but I wanted to know if [his allergies] were caused by something he was eating,” Sellett says. So she started researching the ingredients in different kinds of dog food and found out that, in Smokey’s case at least, the cuisine was the culprit. So she changed his diet and now he lives a healthy life without taking allergy medicine. The experience made Sellett realize how much she enjoyed learning about nutrition for pets. She figured other people might be interested too. Hence, Lollypets. About a month ago, Sellett set up her website to share the business with other people, hoping to get more people onboard as Lollypets consultants. So what do consultants do? They go to parties. Well, “Yappenings” or “Meow Mixers” to be more specific. Sellett presents a program about different nutritional products for pets at these events (anyone can host one, by the way) and, obviously, sells the products afterwards. “It’s a very social and fun thing to do — I’ve had a great time doing this,” she says. “Now I’m looking for more people to get involved.
