There’s certainly no shortage of great independent burger joints around our neighborhood. Some are legendary, others fill the need for grease after a Friday or Saturday night on the town.

Fat Daddy’s comes close to filling the “gourmet” burger niche, even though it probably doesn’t aspire to such a lofty goal.

Healthy-sized burgers, a couple of chicken sandwiches and the obligatory veggie burger predominate the menu. And if you like a variety of accompaniments with your sandwich, Fat Daddy’s is the place for you. Not only can you choose from French fries, onion rings, jalapeño poppers and something called Texas Toothpicks (onions and peppers dipped in batter and deep-fried), but you’ll also find that Fat Daddy’s offers a wealth of burger accessories, too. The condiment bar includes all the regular fixings, plus pico de gallo, two different kinds of onion slices, crisp dill pickle slices, jalapeños and more. Plus, when you place your order, you can order your burger with American, cheddar or Swiss cheese, guacamole and bacon or chili, all at extra charge.

And if your half-pound burger doesn’t fill you up, you can always top the meal off with a malt, shake or sundae.

The restaurant’s ambiance is simple and clean, with red and black booths and chrome tabletops. And the service is friendly but not in-your-face. If you’re in the mood to be waited on, however, skip Fat Daddy’s: You place an order upon entering, receive a number, pick up the food and grab your own drinks and condiments.

Overall, you’ll spend more money at Fat Daddy’s than you will at a drive-through, but you’ll get much more, too.
