Rising from the old Luby’s on Mockingbird, the 2.2-acre site is being transformed by Jon Alexis’ Imperial Fizz Concepts, operators of TJ’s Seafood, Malibu Poke, Escondido Tex-Mex and Ramble Room.

Alexis negotiated a purchase of the property from the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Luby’s landlord and owner of the elementary school next door, in August 2022. Construction is underway.

In addition to general public indoor and outdoor space, Birdie’s will feature a turfed area for kids, an adults-only lounge and a private room with its own patio for special events.

“Whether you’re closing a deal, watching a game or letting the kids play, Birdie’s not only has a place for you, but the room for everyone to co-exist,” Alexis said. “We hope to be in the background of your happiest East Dallas memories.”

Birdie’s Eastside was designed by Hatsumi Kuzuu of kuzuu design in what Alexis describes as a “cozy Marfa vibe.”

The menu will be casual but include scratch-made drinks and grill food. Led by culinary director Stan Rodrigues, diners can enjoy flatbreads, salads, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, pasta and knife-and-fork entrees.

The bar programs will feature local craft beers, wine and specialty cocktails. Alexis predicts the sauvignon blanc slushie to be a warm-weather hit.

Birdies will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

“Birdies is just like East Dallas,” says Alexis. “Casually Texan, a little boho, super comfy and easy going.”
