Baylor’s going to build a big giant cancer-fighting facility.

Baylor Health Care System plans to build a $350 million facility dedicated to treating cancer patients — the first of it’s kind in North Texas. Reportedly, the 450,000 square foot facility is expected to rival Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center, which has been Texas’ only dedicated oncology hospital since it opened in 1944. It will be wonderful to have something like this here in our area — I’ve known people who’ve had to travel to get appropriate treatment.

The cancer center will be next to Baylor University Medical Center here in East Dallas. Construction will begin in 2010 and wrap up around 2013.

This Friday, look for details about hiring plans, local economic impact and center financing following a  press conference with Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert.
