Six babies …

Six mouths to feed, six bodies to clothe, six cribs, six car seats, strollers seating six.

We won’t even get into the mountain of diapers necessary for six tiny tushes.

Efforts already are afoot to get the Meises the help they’ll need.

Sara Casner, Kate Meis’ best friend since the age of six, is leading the charge. She’s working on getting meals donated from area restaurants and people from their church, St. Thomas Aquinas, where she also serves as president of the 250-member Mother’s Association. She’s planning a casserole sale in February and a gently used baby shower in March.

And she’s set up a fund at Professional Bank Lakewood, where anyone can walk in and make a deposit to help the couple out.

Casner’s husband, Rick, is calling contractors and car dealerships, trying to get the Meises help with the babies’ nursery and securing a car big enough to cart around up to seven children. Most recently, the White Rock YMCA donated six car seats.

“She’s a dear person, always out to take care of everyone. And she’s my best friend — like a sister to me,” Sara Casner says. “I just want to be able to just help her out. If it were me, she’d do it for me.”

As for the items they’ll inevitably receive from strangers, Meis says: “We want people to know that after we’re done using it, if they want it back, we’ll give it back, or we’ll pass it on to other moms of multiples or give it to charity.”
