If you drive along Gaston near Garland Road much, you probably haven’t noticed the White Rock YMCA sign on Gaston — it’s pretty forgettable, particularly when matched up next to the big Popeye’s chicken sign on the other side of the YMCA’s driveway.

That’s all going to change this week with the construction of a new 22.5-foot-tall sign that will be going up this week, according to YMCA volunteer board chairman Richard Vitale. The sign has a permanent Y logo, along with an LED readout that can be changed to highlight Y events and programs.

A new sign has been under discussion for years, and Vitale credits board member Santos Martinez for doing the necessary legwork to get the sign design approved by the city and ready for construction.
