At the recent playoffs, the Woodrow Wilson Lady Wildcats defeated Seagoville 15-13 and 15-3. Then, they faced a formidable opponent, Denison. But Denison went down like one of the Wildcats’ spikes, 13-15, 15-9 and 15-3.
But the biggest win was yet to come.
In the regional semi-finals, the Wildcats knocked out Ennis, the seventh-ranked team in the state, by duplicate 15-13, 15-13 scores.
The Lady Wilcats have advanced further than any other volleyball team in DISD history at the 4-A or 5-A level. Next is a regional final against Hallsville, with the winner going to the state tournament.
“These girls can play,” says coach Jim Harris. “We’re gaining respect from everywhere the further we advance in the playoffs. This kind of recognition helps bring volleyball back into the spotlight in Dallas.”
Neighborhood Team Wins National Tournament
The 3.5 Women’s tennis team, comprised of neighborhood residents, recently won the United State Tennis Association Senior League tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
Seventeen teams competed at the tournament for players 50 years or older. The team plays locally at the Westlake Tennis Center.
News & Notes
FINISHED STRONG: It was a stellar season on the hills and meadows of cross-country for the Woodrow Wilson team.
At the Oct. 30 district meet, the boys and girls junior varsity and varsity teams took first place in their respective divisions.
For the girls varsity, Ramona Bedillo and Ashley Cromeens placed fifth and sixth.
On the boys ledger, freshman MacLain Looper took second place in the district place in the district race with a time of 17 minutes. Senior Mario Campos finished sixth with a time of 17:05. In the regional meet, the boys finished fourth, one place short of qualifying for state.
BOYS BASKETBALL: The Wildcats hope to rebound this year from a disappointing 1992-93 season. Coach Mike Kirby has the team ready for its non-district schedule, which began last month against Jesuit High School. District play begins Jan. 14.
Kirby says he has high hopes for returning starters Godfrey Bollin, a 6-foot-1-inch senior point guard, and backcourt mate Lavasher Johnson, a 5-foot-11-inch senior shooting guard.
VARSITY TEAM TENNIS: Coach Gayla Collinsworth says she was pleased with her team’s first fall season performance.
The Wildcats aced W.T. White in the first round of the district tournament, then went on to serve Hillcrest with a 10-2 team victory. With the solid performance, the team advanced to regional, where they battled Palestine. Although Woodrow tied Palestine 9-9 in team matches, Palestine advanced on fewer sets lost.
