Sunset Lake Concert. Imagine the sun setting slowly over White Rock Lake as music swells all around you. Walkman? How gauche. You will have no less than the Dallas Chamber Orchestra. The “Sunset on the Lake” series begins with a tribute to our musical heritage from Africa on March 26, 7 p.m. at the Winfrey Point Pavilion. Tickets are $12 adult, $10 senior and $5 student. DVAC Exhibit. From March 17 through April 28, the Dallas Visual Arts Center, 2801 Swiss, will be exhibiting mosaics by Kazuya Sakai. The Center is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday noon to 4 p.m.; admission is free.
Echo Theatre. On March 9 and 17, the group will present “Onerva” by Finland playwright Heini Tola at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther. For information, call 214-824-7169.
EDUCATION
Open house. “Woodrow Wednesdays,” a series of community open houses, continues on March 1 at the high school, 100 S. Glasgow. School tours and information will be provided by parents, students and staff from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The open house is sponsored by the PTA and School Centered Education Council. Spring Concert. Woodrow’s Fine Arts Department will present its annual spring band concert on March 16 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium, 100 S. Glasgow. The musical evening will feature the concert band and stage band directed by Tom Lolley. Also performing will be band students from J.L. Long Middle School and the neighborhood elementaries. There is no charge for admission. A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the concert. Proceeds will go toward the band’s trip to the Winter Park Colorado Music Festival in April.
Flea Market. The annual Woodrow flea market will be held on April 1 in the school parking lot, 100 S. Glasgow. Sponsored by the Class of 2001, the event hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you would like to set up a table of your own, cost is $15. For information, call Nancy Montgomery at 214-827-5105.
Lakehill Kudos. Assistant Headmaster, Lara Gajkowski, was recently selected to become a member of the North Texas Chorale. Senior Veronica Glaze was one of 10 students in Texas to attend the Pan American Student Forum in Mexico. Third grader Alina Rick won three silver medals at the Mid-Continent Skating Competition in Wichita, Ks. And first grader Katherine Crocker performed in her second season with the El Centro Performing Arts Club dinner show.
Spring Carnival. Yearning for an old fashioned School Carnival to take the kids to? Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 8th from 12:00 – 4:30.p.m. and come to Lakewood Elementary’s Spring Carnival. This year’s theme is “Lakewood 2000 — Millennium Trail Ride.” Play games and contests to test your skills, strength and endurance. Prizes for everyone! Enter your family in the “Who wants to be a Gazillionaire!” Contest and munch on charbroiled hamburgers, chicken breast sandwiches and hot dogs. Cool commemorative t-shirts will be available (designed by a famous Lakewood artist)! Carnival will be held behind the school in the courtyard on Wendover.
Choir Kudos. Woodrow senior Alexa Cromeens has been selected for the Texas All State Choir for the second year. Approximately 20,000 students begin the competition each fall; Alexa is the only girl from Dallas Public Schools to achieve this honor. She is active in the school’s music program, and will play the lead in Woodrow’s upcoming musical “Guys and Dolls” (see story this issue).
The Woodrow Mock Trial Team took first place in the District’s Mock Trial competition recently. The team now advances to State competition. Member of the team include: Edward Cloutman, Jorge Davila, Brad Fralick, Jenny Galliher, Allison Green, Katharine Houpt, Stephen Milbank, Jordan Munn, Samantha Pratt, John Pugliese, Monique Roberts, Andrew Rogers and Ben Wright. The team is coached by Peter Evett, Woodrow’s history department chairman, and attorneys Ed Cloutman and Betsy Julian.
EVENTS AND MEETINGS
Neighborhood Garage Sale. The Lakewood Neighborhood Association will be holding a garage sale March 3-5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 6969 Lakewood Blvd (plus a number of individual sales — drive around). All proceeds from the main sale will fund trash/recycle bins for Lakewood Park.
The White Rock Newcomers Club will meet March 7 at the Holiday Inn, LBJ and Jupiter, 9:30 a.m. The program will be a vintage style show; luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. (cost $14) followed by bridge and games. For reservations, call 214-348-4825 or 348-8751.
Teen Programs. On March 16, 3:30 p.m., teens learn how to write a letter of appreciation to someone who’s done something kind — pens, paper, envelopes and postage provided (limit one per person). It’s a “Library Laugh-Off” on March 21, 4 p.m., with prizes awarded to the best jokes from ages 12-18. Both events take place at the Lakewood Library, 6121 Worth. For information, call 214-670-1634.

JUST FOR KIDS
The Enchanted Forest Bookstore has a number of fun events this month including a March 4 reading from author Helen Ketteman (3:30 p.m.), a free reading and puppet show — “Where the Wild Things Are” — on March 11 (11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and noon), and a March 18 celebration of National Youth Art Month — drop by and draw on the store’s balcony (10:15 a.m., noon, 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.). Texans Credit Union reached $1 billion in assets in February, a significant milestone for the 46-year-old not-for-profit financial institution. Texans was founded with only $55 dollars on Oct. 8, 1953.
Casa Linda Plaza raised over $1,800 for local elementary schools through the “It’s Elementary” program, which took place Oct. 18 through Jan. 7. Hexter Elementary placed first in the program, Sanger was second and Reinhardt third.
