The Lower Greenville Neighborhood Association will host City Councilman Philip Kingston on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Kingston will give am update from City Hall and discuss how it is impacting Lower Greenville. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the upstairs mezzanine at Slater’s 50/50.

Neighbors have a chance to see an event that only comes around every 375 years on Monday, Aug. 21. From 10:40 a.m. to 2:40 p.m., a rare solar eclipse will be visible from Dallas, and the Arboretum will offer a slew of activities for those who are curious about the celestial ceremony. Minutes of Midnight will give patrons a chance to take in the eclipse while enjoying a picnic or enjoying $2 hot dogs, Kona Ice sno cones and oversized board games. Guests are advised to bring their own “viewing devices,” though there will be complementary viewing glasses while supplies last. The program will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and admission is only $1.

There will be a staged reading from Texas authors Larry McMurtry, Frank Dobie, Philip Atlee and more at the Lochwood Library this Thursday and Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday at 4:30 p.m. This event will be in collaboration with the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs and the Dallas Public Library.

On Thursday, Aug. 17, Greenville Avenue Pizza Company (GAPCo) will host its fifth annual “Slices for Supplies” event benefitting Zaragoza Elementary School in Old East Dallas, where 96 percent of its 400 students are considered low-socio-economic status, according to Dallas ISD. Between 5-8 p.m., guests who bring school supplies GAPCo will receive a free slice of cheese pizza with one topping of their choice. GAPCo has pledged to match monetary donations on that day.

Join Joanna Cattanach and Lori Kirkpatrick for a teacher appreciation night at Times Ten Cellars on Tuesday, Aug. 22, from 5-7 p.m. They want to thank teachers for their effort to make this school year a success. Food and drink available for purchase.

Half Price Books will be hosting a pair of book signings this Sunday from 1-3 p.m. to meet local author Erin Pace. Pace will sell and sign her Christian-living book “Carried: A Story of Faith, Hope, and Love.” Another local writer, Quinine Nichols, will sell and sign her book “Queenish: Embracing the Empowerment of Women.” Books will be sold independently while supplies last.

Hand and Stone Massage will be holding an event to raise money for Stonewall Jackson Elementary on Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 3-7 p.m. The event will showcase the Fall Collection by India Hicks Lifestyle Collection, along with door prizes, snacks and adult beverages.
