Visitors to Hillside Village are buzzing about a retro mural recently unveiled at the shopping center.
“I found Rasheal on Instagram, and her feed was bright and refreshing and fit with Hillside Village,” said Amanda Lopez, marketing manager for Northwood Retail.
Inspired by the history of Lakewood, as well as the tenants and signage around the shopping center, Winters created a 390-square-foot mural intended to brighten anyone’s day with its bold colors and honeycomb accents.
The mural was made primarily with spray paint, but Winters painted the Lakewood lettering by hand with acrylic-based paint. The piece took about six days to paint and was completed the first week of February.
“The people in Lakewood are such encouragers,” Winters said. “I spent probably an hour every day talking to people, shouting from their cars, honking and giving me thumbs up. Even in the messy process, people were so excited about it. Something about painting in Lakewood was just different.”
Winters left her career in corporate America and became a full-time artist in January 2020. She founded Created Art Co. and paints custom murals and art pieces for businesses and homeowners. Previous work includes a mural outside The Darling Co. building in Richardson.
Find the Lakewood mural between Weight Watchers and Ebby Halliday Properties, which sit adjacent to East Mockingbird Lane.
“The piece is for all of Lakewood, and we felt it was a signature piece for our tenants, and I think they’re proud of it as well,” Lopez said.
