When East Dallas neighbor Ryan Berg auditioned for NBC’s “The Voice,” Gwen Stefani and John Legend turned their chairs to indicate they’d gladly add him to their team. Last night during the battle round, Berg earned accolades from every coach and a chance to move on to the knockouts.
“You are my cup of tea as a vocalist,” gushed Kelly Clarkson. “I want to hear you sing Ray LaMontagne. I want a glass of wine while I’m listening. I love your vibe.”
“You’re both very aggressive vocally,” joked Blake Shelton, who referred to the physical stance of both Berg and Liam St. John while singing Aloe Blacc’s “I Need a Dollar.” “You’re both sneaking around, trying to catch a rabbit or something.”
Shelton turned serious, praising Berg for his calm professionalism when his microphone came dislodged during the performance.
“One thing tips this in Ryan’s favor, for me, and that’s that mic pack,” Shelton said. “To be able to not even acknowledge it. He didn’t even care, he was singing the song. He was focused on what he had to do, and that was incredible.”
“Ryan, I particularly enjoy your tone of voice,” said Legend. “It’s a little bit more of my style.”
“Today was a shock for me,” said Stefani. “I didn’t know you had the showmanship that you showed me today. It was so good. It was so tasteful.”

The knockout rounds begin tonight at 7 p.m. on NBC affiliate Channel 5, with Dallas-born Usher on hand as Mega Mentor. The award-winning singer-songwriter helped coach Legend’s team during two previous seasons.
