Crews at Highland Park Cafeteria prepare Thanksgiving for several thousand.

In a Food & Wine list of the best cafeterias in America, Highland Park Cafeteria was selected as an honorable mention.

Highland Park Cafeteria was founded in 1925 and was named “America’s Cafeteria” by the New York Times in 1981. The Casa Linda Plaza location is the former chain’s last open business.

“After nearly a century of serving chicken — chicken fried steak, chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, you name it — to Dallasites with big appetites, what was once referred to as ‘America’s Cafeteria’ has downsized greatly to just the one location. The legend (thankfully) lives on,” reporter David Landsel wrote for the Food & Wine list released Nov. 22.

Houston’s Cleburne Cafeteria earned the No. 1 spot.
