It’s been a busy month for veteran skateboarder Mike Crum. The East Dallas resident hasn’t even reopened his skatepark, 4DWN, but it’s already hosted more than 1,000 fans and some of the world’s best skaters, who have competed on its colorful ramps.
4DWN will reopen from 2-8 p.m. Saturday after it temporarily shut its doors for six months to build a course for the Zumiez Best Foot Forward finals. The competition on Sept. 7 was the culmination of 40 contests that occurred around the globe in search of the best amateur skaters. The local winners from every city then converged on Dallas to compete.
Located at 2633 Ferris St. near Fair Park, 4DWN is a nonprofit skatepark that Crum started in 2016 as a way to promote the sport and support young skaters. The park includes an indoor skating space with ramps, an outdoor bowl, a concert stage and a community garden.
The nonprofit partners with other organizations for events like the DGK Saved by Skateboarding clinic. During the event, pro skaters Boo Johnson and Don Cooley gave 15 complete skateboards and other goodies to south Dallas youth.
