Dallas police have arrested a second person in the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old girl last month in East Dallas.

Davonte Benton, 19, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Dallas County jail on a capital murder charge, authorities said. He remained in jail Friday in lieu of $500,000 bond, jail records show.

Benton is accused in the slaying of 9-year-old Brandoniya Bennett, who died Aug. 14 in her home at the Roseland Townhomes on Munger Avenue.

Tyrese Simmons, 19, has also been charged in the girl’s death. Police said Simmons mistakenly killed Brandoniya after shooting into the wrong apartment. His intended target had been a rapper who “dissed” him in a song.

Simmons turned himself in and remains at the Dallas County jail on a capital murder charge.
