Lakewood Country Club, 6430 Gaston

Built in 1912, the club was the envy of golfers all over the state. When hard times hit during the depression, the club kept itself afloat by installing slot machines in the men’s locker rooms. The 1944 Texas Victory Open was won by Byron Nelson, giving birth to the Byron Nelson Classic which remains one of golf’s biggest annual events. (Source: Lakewood Country Club)
