In case you missed last year’s story about band director Chris Evetts and his efforts to turn the Woodrow band from a ragtag ensemble to a scholarship-worthy team, you can read it here.
The Woodrow Wilson Wildcats band has grown significantly over the past three years and this is the second year for the band to share the Granada stage with a local artist. This year the band will be performing with Dallas-based singer/crooner Mikey Dino.
If you’ve been in East Dallas for a while, you might recognize Dino, who has been performing his Dean Martin sound-alike act for nearly two decades, dating back to the Neo-Swing Revival of the mid- to late-90s. With the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, and heavy-pulsing swing beats blaring out of local dance clubs in Deep Ellum, Lower Greenville, and other hot spots in Big D, Mikey Dino became a weekly feature as part of the Night Oh Cabaret, a vaudevillian type variety show, performing tunes “as” Dean Martin, and also riffing on Bobby Darin, Dion, Franki Valli, and others. Mikey has had the opportunity to perform with many great artists, from the early days with his own cover band “No Commitment”, to singing locally with bands like Ricki Derek, to eventually touring internationally with the Doo-Wop group “The Fabulous Harmonaires”.
All the funds raised at the concert will be added to the Woodrow Wilson Band Fund for support of private music lessons for the kids that cannot afford to pay out of pocket. This past year the band attained full varsity status and was placed in the top four at the Denton Triangle Marching Classic. Additionally the band has performed on local television and at many area events.
The School of Rock will perform as well in the second part of the show. School of Rock teaches guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards, drums and combines weekly private music lessons and group band rehearsals to prepare students to take the stage in front of live audiences in an authentic concert setting.
