Coyotes, because we just can’t get enough of them

We aren’t the only ones with coyote concerns. Or fascination. The Chicago Tribune reports that the animals are becoming so common in that city’s western suburbs that a seminar devoted to dealing with coyotes drew record crowds.

One piece of advice did seem a bit much, though. A wildlife biologist, asked what do when confronted by coyotes, offered this: “Never turn away from them. Run at them. Carry a stick.”

That’s easy for him to say.

A couple of winters ago, I went outside to pick up our paper off the lawn–without my glasses. Standing in the road a few yards from me was what I thought was a stray dog. I started trying to call it over because I am a sucker for strays and it looked skinny and scruffy. It just stood there and stared at me. As it turned away, I squinted to see better and saw the tail of a coyote. I froze as it sauntered down the street. Now I always put my glasses on before I step outside. Kelly (Forest Hills Blvd)
