White Rock ‘n’ Roll 10-mile and 5-mile run Saturday

Start Running 1024x685 240x160 White Rock n Roll 10 mile and 5 mile run Saturday Saturday is Cinco de Mayo. Prepare your body for the extreme celebratory consumption of chips and margaritas with a five or even a ten-mile run. There’s also a 1-miler for the kiddos and slow pokes at the White Rock ‘n’ Roll races.

If you miss online registration, which commences Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., you can still register race morning between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. at Winfrey Point. Find the rest of the registration and schedule info here.

No need for iPods, runners, because bands including Kumassi, The Krooks and Jagged Edge will perform along the course and at the finish party.

Now, despite the fact that the city will allow Arboretum patrons to park on the grass at Winfrey Point, race participants will not be allowed to park on the grass or in the parking lots of nearby establishments.

From the Dallas Running Club:

DO NOT park on the grass (you will be ticketed/towed), around the baseball diamond, or in any retail establishment along Garland Road that is open on Saturday morning (particularly Casa Linda Shopping Center and Barbec’s, etc.). We’re expecting 1000-1200 participants, so we recommend you arrive early, as parking WILL be an issue.

Boy’s lion art brings in money for cancer research

bo 159x240 Boys lion art brings in money for cancer research

Bo Anderson

East Dallas’ Bo Anderson, an 8th grader at St. Bernard school near White Rock Lake who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, is an artist. His work was selected for a book that will raise money for the Children’s Cancer Fund.

Children’s Cancer Fund will host its 24th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, in the Trinity Ballroom of the Hilton Anatole Hotel to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

At the fundraiser, organizers will unveil the 2012 Children’s Cancer Fund Inspiration Book  showcasing original artwork by young cancer patients, including Bo, inspired by their experiences with cancer. Bo’s contribution is that of “two lions overlooking a cliff ,” according to a press release; looks to me like that beautiful scene from The Lion King in which young Simba and King Mufasa discuss the secrets of life.

Bo should enjoy an exciting day at the luncheon where he will get to meet the likes of Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, Drew Pearson, Miss Texas Kendall Morris and Rudy Gatlin, to name a few. Plus, he will participate in a special runway show with 37 other young cancer survivors.

On a personal note, my daughter is friends with Bo Anderson. I remember the day a few years ago that we found out he had cancer. It sort of shook the whole little community. We visited him at Children’s Hospital and, honestly, it was frightening. The whole Anderson family, including Bo’s too-cute little sister Camille, has been unbelievably strong through the experience. So, hey, what I am saying is, buy a book! They are $16 a copy through Children’s Cancer Fund at 972.664.1450 or childrenscancerfund.net.

If you care to attend the event:

Tickets for the 24th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show are $150 per person or $1,250 per table of ten.  For reservations and more information, readers can contact Children’s Cancer Fund at 972-664-1450 or visit childrenscancerfund.net.

Eat at Angelo’s, help to improve Lakewood fountain

Angelo’s will donate 15 percent of all sales Thursday, April 26, to Promise of Peace. The volunteers and children of Promise of Peace will use the money to spruce up the fountain in front of the Lakewood Theater.

The nonprofit’s executive director, Elizabeth Dry, says they plant to amend the soil and install new plants. If the budget allows, they might do some painting as well.

The volunteers and kids will be working Saturday, April 28, and the Lakewood Theater will be grilling. The community is invited to lend a hand.

The fountain is owned by D.O.T., the charity thrift store at 5810 Live Oak. The Mills family, which co-owns the old Lakewood Library building, pays the taxes on the fountain area on behalf of D.O.T.

Please help find Wilbur.

Wilbur the gander, who lives by the White Rock Bath house, is a handsome leader of geese with an impressive fan base, his own “friends” group and Facebook page.

Wilbur watchers are worried tonight because Wilbur along with three other geese who live at the lake seem to be missing.

Friend of Wilbur and neighborhood resident Amy Martin says she fears the geese were goose-napped sometime Sunday.

Wilbur’s human friends ask that if you know anything about the waterfowls’ whereabouts, please call 972-890-4429 or email friendsofwilbur@yahoo.com. More about Wilbur’s history, from “Friends of Wilbur”, after the jump. (more…)

White Rock Home Tour showcases five modern homes

The White Rock Home Tour is from noon-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22. It features five modern homes in the White Rock Area. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $15 on the days of the tour.

We featured the home of Scott and Melissa Powell in the April Advocate. Their home, which is on the tour, is new. But it’s built in the mid-century modern style. Scott Powell is a builder, and he and Melissa designed it together, working from the original footprint to build a house they hope to call home for many years to come.
