Cafe Lago is closed

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 6.20.18 PMCafe Lago owner Gabriela Kovacic has announced her retirement and the subsequent closing of her White Rock Lake area restaurant.

Kovacic, who has been in the restaurant biz since 1987, says she is tired and ready to spend some time with her family, including a sister who has cancer, and that she has no plans to ever open another restaurant.

“Restaurant ownership is a tough, physically demanding job,”she writes, “and I am tired, drained, pooped, fatigued … but excited about what the future will bring me—rest, time to read, be with my family, especially my baby sister who could use my help as she journeys through a little more breast cancer. I just may have time to cook for friends and re-direct my life. I assure you that another restaurant is not in my future.”

She expresses deep gratitude to her employees and guests over the years and says she is thrilled with the culinary direction in which this area is headed. Kovacic plans to throw a goodbye party in the spring, she says. If you want on the mailing list, email mgabriela@sbcglobal.net.

Sooooo not cool and a big fat lie. The note was a cool poster for customers, I saw it. my best friend worked there and she was there and got paid. She even got a bunch of food, wine and mementos. People are so mean and think their opinon is so important when they don’t even know what they’re talking about. I loved Cafe Lago and thought she was a funny, hardworking, good boss. She always, always helped my friend out with her school and personal stuff and her scheduling but she expected people to do their jobs right. Anytime I ordered food there she always gave me a cookie, or extra something no charge and I never asked for that.

She’s a total B. Well-documented in Yelp and any other online forum where her restaurant is mentioned. I can’t say I disagree with those people since I saw her yell at her employees in full view of customers on more than one occasion, and I can’t describe her attitude as anything remotely resembling ‘friendly.’ I think she was anatomically incapable of smiling.  She might think she ran a tight ship, but what’s the point if even your customers think you’re crazy?

    Ouch, that is real ugly.

Thanking the staff is a little late. Apparently everyone showed up for work and all that was left was a locked, empty restaurant with a note for the staff.

Awww, this is bitter/sweet. I love that place, but it did seem like it was having a hard time making it. I wish the family.
