Petition seeks to nix liquor license for Far West nightclub

Drunken drivers, empty beer bottles, random acts of vandalism and the occasional gunfight are typical Saturday night happenings for residents of Tucker Street near White Rock Lake.

All the rowdiness stems from a nearby nightclub, Far West. Neighbors have been fighting Far West at least since 2008, when they challenged a 99-year specific use permit the owners had to operate a dance hall there. They got the S.U.P. changed to five years, and it expires in 2013.

That’s not soon enough for neighbors who are tired of the weekly pandemonium. So this time, they are contesting the club’s liquor license. The license is up for renewal in December, and two lawyers have volunteered their time to file a protest with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Last month, they sent a 14-page letter detailing violence at the club, including a Jan. 18 fight that lead to a car chase with police and a shooting.

So far this year, police have filed seven aggravated assault complaints at the club. And there were two cases of “accidental injury”, when people got hit in the head with bottles.

City Councilman Angela Hunt, who attended a Lakewood Hills Neighborhood Association crime watch meeting Tuesday, says she recently asked the fire marshal to check up on the club.

The club’s legal capacity is 2,500, and the doorman told the fire department some 2,400 were inside. The fire marshal counted more than 3,000 people leaving the club. But a $1,000 fine for violating fire code is just part of doing business for some clubs, Hunt said.

“Yeah, we can keep sending the fire marshal and babysitting them and giving them fines,” she says. “But we need a more substantial solution than that.”

After the jump, something weird related to Far West.

I happened to come across this 9-minute video from Vice films about the fashion trend of Mexican pointy-toe boots. Evidently, it is popular among followers of tribal music. The film includes an interview the “god” of tribal music, DJ Erick Rincón of Mexico City, who says the first time he ever saw these pointy-toe boots was in Dallas, at Far West nightclub.

Is this something that requires neighborhood support? If so, how can we help?

  • FRED

What about the charges that they are having ‘erotic’ shows in there with underage participants?

Where do I sign? I would love to see the neighborhood rid of this nightmare.

Wow, what a complete and utter shock to discover that the web page is entirely in Spanish. Who could have imagined? This is such a surprise.

    Three cheers for vibrant diversity!

I hate this place, too. It backs up traffic, the drunks are awful. Just has nothing positive to offer.
Would also love to know how to fight it. The city needs to re-do that Grand/Gaston/Garland intersection and re-make it into the gateway into White Rock and Lakewood that it deserves to be, not the current pawn shop, decrepit shopping center, awful nightclub, dirty mechanic shop, ugly liquor store, traffic nightmare and bum hangout that it currently is.

  • FRED

When it was Cowboys night club, the police would stake out corners of the parking lot and arrest drunks coming out. Now it seems they don’t do anything.

I think somebody is getting paid to look the other way on this place.

    Ohhh Advocate….
I completely understand the arguments made and I’m not condoning stupid acts of drunken violence but this YouTube clip is not informing the audience of the problem at hand — this video is informing of the evolution of cultural trends and misinterprets mexican popular culture but that was a good stab at trying to openly insult an ethnic group! I don’t doubt that the club might get its liquor license revoked but the clip added to this article was irrelevant and unprofessional. Thank you Advocate Magazine!

@Kayla: You must be getting Rachel mixed up with JasonM, above. Rachel didn’t discuss her reasoning with me, but she did make clear in the post how the bonus, add-on video is relevant to Far West: DJ Erick Rincon first saw the pointy boot trend there. Actually, the interesting but neutral Mexican pointy-boot video is the one part of the blog post that takes the focus off of how much of a crummy neighbor the Far West club has been.

If you’ve seen our coverage in the past about the friction between rowdy Greenville Ave bar patrons and nearby homeowners, you’ll know our editors are not partial to one racial group of annoying, drunken partiers over another. Whether they’re wearing pointy boots, pointy heels, Toms or going barefoot.

    Dear Advocate-

What does this video clip have to do with the real problem, NOTHING!!!! This was really not necessary! Personally I don’t like the boots, but I also don’t like tattoos, nor do I like nose, tongue, lip piercings either-whether we like it or not, its a fashion trend, get over it! FOCUS on the issue/problem- not the MEXICAN POINTY BOOTS! This was so UNPROFESSIONAL. I am hispanic and I am insulted, and just FYI- its not just Mexicans that go to Far West- get your facts straight RACHEL.
