William Jones was displeased with his performance in the first game. “Awful,” he responded when asked how he played.
Assistant coach Donna Benton counters with a smile. “He did good! He just didn’t play as well as he usually does.”
Maybe the pressure got to him a wee bit. After all, it was the first day of the Young Strikers’ National Senior League’s National Wii Bowling Tournament.
Coach Jerome Lewis, the wellness coordinator at C.C. Young Retirement Community, formed the team a few months ago as a way to involve residents in some healthy competition.
They weren’t very interested at first, Lewis says. “Some knew what a Wii was, but not many.”
He visited all of the C.C. Young buildings, hosted demonstrations and eventually garnered enough interest to form a team and enter it in the tournament.
The competition takes place entirely online to eliminate traveling risks and logistics.
The Young Strikers’ main mission? Beat defending national champs the SAS Strikers from Florida, who have dominated the tournament the last three years.
