Lakewood’s dog-friendly shops

This article is 3 of 15 in the 10.2006 issue.

You want to go shopping, but Rover’s puppy dog eyes are piercing your soul as you back out the door. If you can’t handle the guilt trip, just take him with you. The Knox-Henderson shops are a good place to start. Z Gallerie, Restoration Hardware, Smith & Hawken, Quatrine, Pottery Barn and its cousin, Pottery Barn Kids, all welcome leashed and well-behaved dogs. Then head over to Skillman and La Vista, where The Consignment Solution loves pooches so much it keeps a water bowl and biscuits handy. Or drop by West Village, where eclectic home décor shop Legacy Trading Co. is one of many that welcomes dogs. In another outdoor shopping village, Highland Park, clothing boutique Polo Ralph Lauren not only welcomes pets but usually offers treats, too. In the mood for a little DIY? Neither Home Depot at both Skillman and White Rock nor Lowe’s on Northwest Highway have any problem with pets. (All stores have signs out front declaring “no animals allowed,” but employees said they don’t pay them any heed.) And if you’re an outdoors lover, take your pup to Whole Earth Provision Co. on East Mockingbird, where the employees profess to love pets almost more than people. The biscuits, bowls of water (filtered, mind you) and hearty strokes your dog will receive are proof. This list is by no means extensive; pick up the phone, and you’ll be surprised how many Dallas shops invite your pup to tag along while you shop. Just make sure you ask before setting paw in the store.
