The new owner of a Mockingbird Lane apartment complex plans to restore the murals that were once featured on the four-story building.

Strategic Property Investment Advisors bought the 5 Mockingbird apartment complex at 5555 E. Mockingbird Lane and will hire a local artist to paint new murals, principal Michael Becker said. The artwork will be located on the building’s south-facing exterior.

Seven art deco murals depicting the old Dr. Pepper plant at the intersection of Mockingbird and Greenville Avenue once covered the front of the former Phoenix Midtown apartment complex.

Previous owner Crow Holdings painted over the murals with beige paint in 2017.

“I grew up in the Dallas area, and when the prior owner painted them beige, everyone was disappointed to see them go,” Becker said. “The owner did a great job of taking care of the interior, and we’re trying to make the curb appeal more memorable.”

The company will start collecting artists’ proposals for two or three murals to be painted on the building. Becker said he hopes work can begin in the first half of 2021.

“We want to make it Dallas centric so people who live here can get inspired,” Becker said. “A little piece of Dallas history of whatever we put up there is the goal.”
