On Tuesday, major labels in the music industry participated in a “blackout” on social media to protest racism and police brutality, but artists say change requires more than a hashtag.

East Dallas “Queen of Soul” Erykah Badu responded with a message on Instagram.

If the music industry wants to support black lives, labels and platforms can start with amending contracts, distributing royalties, diversifying boardrooms and retroactively paying back all the black artists and their families they have built their empires on.

Historically, black musicians received very little money or credit for the songs they wrote and recorded. Black artists, especially black women, also experience more criticism than their white counterparts.
