Lakeland Drive is scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic Friday evening as crews finish a bridge construction project that has spanned about two years, according to the Dallas City Council District 9 Facebook page.
Construction crews are still working on fencing and sodding near the bridge between Arturo Drive and Eustis Avenue. However, the contractor has completed installation of railing, drainage structures, road paving and sidewalks.
The project is nearly finished, although its completion date has been pushed back several times, most recently, from December 2019 to April 2020.
The projected also experienced an unexpected delay in April 2018 when crews discovered AT&T fiber optic lines serving the adjacent neighborhood under the bridge, the Advocate previously reported. Construction resumed a year later after an AT&T contractor dug new trenches and installed empty conduit pipes to transfer copper and fiber optic wires from old existing lines.
The 1930s-era bridge between Branchfield Drive and Fisher Road on West Lawther Road failed last year. The design phase is complete, and the construction award will go before the City Council for a vote May 13, according to the Dallas City Council District 9 Facebook page. If approved, construction should begin in late May or early June. Completion is expected in February 2021.
