In 1975, some East Dallas apartment complexes didn’t allow families with children.

“The number of apartment complexes that accept families are limited,” a newscaster said in this video from the G. William Jones Film & Video Collection. “Families just don’t have the options available to single and childless families.”

The collection, part of SMU Libraries, was founded in 1970 and was renamed in memory of its founder, G. William Jones.

This video, “Dallas Becoming an Apartment City,” was first broadcast in July 1975.

At 00:52, there’s a shot of Skillman Street and Southwestern Boulevard.
