A June 1996 cover of the Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate.

The Advocate has been your No.1 source of neighborhood news since 1991. And through the years, you’ve probably seen some familiar faces on the cover.

In an email sent May 16 to supporters, District 9 City Council candidate Paula Blackmon shared this photo from June 1996, when she was featured on the cover of the magazine. Blackmon will face Erin Moore in a June 8 runoff for the seat.

In the cover story, the Advocate investigated neighbors’ concerns over construction of the DART’s northeast line, stretching from Mockingbird to White Rock Lake. Most feared the noise, while others argued the rails would bring crime and negatively affect property values.

On this day of remembrance, take a minute to look through old Advocate covers in our digital archive or check out our top-10 favorites.

Like time capsules, the covers mirror the changing culture and values of our neighborhood.
