Drew Ellis, who has been rowing since he was 13, won the men’s varsity single. He will continue rowing on a college scholarship at Temple University in Philadelphia this fall.

Ellis also placed second Saturday at the Central Youth Championships in Rowing in Oklahoma City. He qualified for the 2019 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships on June 6-9 in Sarasota, Florida.

Several East Dallas rowers with White Rock Rowing also won medals at the competition. Woodrow’s Benjamin Winslow won first place in the men’s freshman four-person crew and second place in the men’s youth novice nine-person crew.

A nine-person crew — which included Kellen Zellmer from Bishop Lynch and Woodrow students Seamus Gough, John Healy, Bobby Bye, Grant Slaughter, Isaac Hutchison and Peter Ellis-Mani — finished second in the men’s freshman competition.

Nora Daly from St. Thomas Aquinas won bronze on a two-person crew in the women’s youth novice event.

Dallas United Crew rowers, senior Connor Alexander and junior Anders Ekstrom from Lakehill, earned the silver medal in the men’s varsity eight-person crew. In addition to Ellis, the pair will advance to the Youth National Champions.

Lakehill eighth-grader Mars Henderson earned bronze in the junior varsity women’s crew.
