Those of us who prefer the heft of a book in hand over a Kindle can take comfort in knowing one of our neighborhood’s few remaining used book stores will stay in business. After an uncertain couple of months, Lucky Dog Books is settling into its new home at Casa Linda Plaza.
It was a community effort that saved the independent store, it seems. The business pleaded for customer support in the form of gift certificates to raise the funds needed to relocate.
It got a boost from neighbor Mark Wootton of Garden Café, who pledged to give $500 in American Airlines tickets to one lucky person who purchases a $100 Lucky Dog gift certificate. The winner will be selected randomly.
Neighbors even helped pack moving boxes to relocate the store from Lochwood to its new location at 1152 N. Buckner, suite 105, right next to Wingstop. The business is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
It’s been a rough few years for the local chain, which closed its Oak Cliff store, only to reopen it a few months later in a new location. When news came that the new owner of the Lochwood property planned to rehab the property, Lucky Dog needed $4,000-$5,000 to relocate to a lower-rent property. A longtime customer stepped up with $1,000 gift certificate, which she plans to give to local literacy groups.
