Within eight months of opening its doors, My Family’s Pizza has garnered a reputation for serving up a superior Sicilian thin crust pizza. Longtime Dallas residents have visited the first location of this chain, originally named Pizza by Marco, on Preston Road since the 1960s. As the new name implies, the pizza — made with a decades-old Sicilian sauce recipe — has some serious family roots. And Matthew Rangel, one of the Skillman pizza joint’s three co-owners, has deep Lakewood roots himself. As a proud alum of Stonewall Jackson, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Woodrow Wilson, he says he’s thrilled to have the support of his hometown. “This is such a laid back, friendly community, and I want this restaurant to represent that.” One way to enjoy that casual vibe, Rangel says, is to order a My Family’s crispy-crusted pie and sip a cold pint inside his other business, The Pour House, next door.

Brian, it’s funny — I had the same reaction of surprise when the places that normally receive the most hype (including some that I frequent) weren’t in the top three. But considering that there are some social media and publicity experts who didn’t make the top three, my conclusion wasn’t to dismiss the restaurants people voted for but instead to wonder if those people know something I don’t. Either way, I’ll be patronizing these first-, second- and third-place neighborhood pizzerias to see what the fuss is all about, as well as the other ones on the voting ballot that I already love. Good to have options!

I haven’t eaten at My Families Pizza yet. it may be fantastic, but I’m highly suspicious of the legitimacy of this contest when the top three winners are not the popular great pizza places everyone talks about. perhaps the best pizza places are a little too busy to convince their customers to go and vote.
