White Rock Lake coyotes venture out

The wildlife at White Rock Lake is always a topic of fascination here. We’ve got pigs and peacocks and, of course, coyotes.

Over on the WFAA viewer-submitted photo blog, someone has uploaded three great shots of a rather large coyote at the Celebration Tree Grove, which is right along the trail on the east side of White Rock Lake.

“It was chewing on the name plates and watering hoses,” notes the photographer.

Meanwhile, on the (public) Lake Ridge Estates neighborhood Facebook page, there is a notice about a family pet found dead on its lawn, the apparent victim of a coyote attack.

Very rarely do coyotes attack people (really, almost never, wildlife experts say) but they will go after little animals.

I saw one in the alley across from Lakewood Elementary. Looked right at me and turned away. We also have had a stray kitty found killed in the lot next to us.

I saw one on Ravendale behind the Fuzzy’s in Hillside Village at 7:30 in the morning when I was out running a couple weeks ago. It ran much faster than me. Good thing it didn’t think I was a kitty.

Coyotes attack people far more often that people in cities would like to believe.

Don’t let your kitties roam and maybe small dogs likewise. I have seen a coyote on the LCC golf course at dusk, found a half-eaten squirrel in my front yard, one mess of dove or pigeon feathers & beak and such as that. Also have seen the huge silver foxes and one smaller red fox. Other folks have posted on my fb seeing bobcat on the Santa Fe trail in addition to coyotes, stray dogs, etc. Then I had seen a huge red-tailed hawk eyeing a small black chiuahuaha recently but a golfer picked the dog up and it was finally returned to its owner.

I had an incident on 12/23/11 at Winfrey Point where I ran across a mother coyote and its cubs.  The mother advanced towards me aggressively, at which point I threw my arms in the air and screamed at it which kept it at bay.  The cubs began howling and the mother lunged once more before turning away.  I kept my hands up, made myself as “big” as possible and kept yelling at it which I think made her think twice about engaging.  It was about 7:30 pm and dark, so runners beware!  Good workout though….heart rate went from 150 to 180 in about 2 seconds!

I saw a family of three while walking my greyhounds at Audubon Fish Hatchery trail near the filtration plant.

This morning 2/19, my 2 dogs and I were surrounded by 4 coyotes at the Winfrey Point baseball diamonds. They started to move towards us and were not affected by me waving my arms or yells. I phoned the police and they showed up and took pictures and told me that animal control wouldn’t or couldn’t do anything until someone or a domestic animal was hurt?? I think animal control needs reconsider that thought process.

We see a coyote near trammel and bucknell in university terrace… Have seen him probably 5-6 times over the last few years. We named him Frederick. He seems older and calmer and definitely not interested in humans. I’ve even seen him in broad daylight lying in the horse pasture adjacent to our home, horses just eating grass nearby not a care in the world! Very odd.

The Coyotes make an interesting contribution to the biodiversity of White Rock Lake. The one in the image was seen sunning himself recently at Celebration Tree Grove at White Rock Lake. You can see more images here:
