No, that wasn’t Valentine’s Day gunfire you heard

IMG 1109 180x240 No, that wasnt Valentines Day gunfire you heard

The Lakewood Country Club presented a fireworks show Valentine's Day eve.

If you happened by Lakewood Country Club, Gaston & Abrams, about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday on your way to or from a big sweetheart celebration, you may have heard what initially sounded like the start of a Jason Bourne movie.

But alas (or perhaps thank goodness), the Lakewood shopping village wasn’t under siege and the famed Lakewood Rats weren’t using automatic weapons at Dixie House.

Instead, you were treated to a 10-minute-or-so fireworks display next to the club’s driving range.

UPDATE ON WEDNESDAY MORNING: I talked with a spokesman from the country club, and the show was paid for by a member to surprise his wife, so no country club money was involved and that’s why there was no advance warning.

The guy’s wife was certainly treated to a great show: The fireworks compared pretty well with the annual 4th of July show the club presents, and it was a nice change of pace from all of that lovey-dovey stuff on Valentine’s Day, too.

As a club member I didn’t know about it. What a waste of money.

Lakewooder1, I’m not a fireworks pricing expert, but I imagine a display like that cost at least a few thousands of dollars. Seems like something the members would have heard about or at least been invited to attend.

Glad to have that mystery cleared up.  I could hear it up in Merriman Park.

That would be correct sir! I was there Friday night, Saturday day and received an email update today about steak night but nothing about fireworks.

Glad to know What it was, but why???

Thanks! We were on the front porch trying to decide to flee the city!

Did anyone stop to think maybe it was a proposal, and someone arranged for it out of their own pocket? The world does exist outside of your own little bubble ya know.

The display was AMAZING!! We were hoping it was related to a marriage proposal or wedding anniversay…”honey, I promised you’s see fireworks tonight!” …

We saw it and could only think it was a marriage proposal. My kids were shouting “good luck” towards the CC so I hope it was!

I would have appreciated some advance notice. It scared the heck out of my child and kept him awake. The timing did coincide with his bed time.

Scared my 3 yr old too, RIGHT at bedtime also!
So un-romantic for this lakewood parent :(

How sweet. I really think it was more than 10 mins and it was WOW. I was home alone and had a pretty good view from my balcony. I totally enjoyed it. What a lucky lady.

It was more than 10 minutes to be sure.

My first reaction was that it was part of a proposal. I think it’s even more romantic that someone did it for his wife.

From what I gather, it was a surprise by a gentleman for his Valentine.

Happened to be dining at the club that night, and the fireworks were a surprise to everyone there as well. They were gorgeous and it was such a romantic gesture!

  • Scared dog owner

It was way more than 10 minutes. We kept waiting for it to end (not knowing what it was) and ended up finally having to sedate one of our dogs after at least 10 minutes.

We also live near Lakewood CC and were scared sh*tless at first.  A surprise for your wife should not also be a “surprise” for the rest of the neighborhood — for 15+ minutes of what originally sounded like gunshots.

My husband relied the couple mustn’t have been married long; he thought he was being funny, huh?

  • Sarcher

My daughter enjoyed them from her bedroom window before bedtime. What a treat!
